Detectives from the South African Police Service's Serious and Violent Crime unit have launched a manhunt for a suspect linked to a mass shooting at a shebeen in Marikana informal settlement, where nine people were killed, and another was wounded.

Police say 28-year-old Lonwabo Steven Dyasi is wanted for murder following the attack in Philippi East on January 17, at a shebeen in the Marikana informal settlement, where gunmen opened fire on patrons inside the shack.

A warrant for his arrest has been issued.

A second suspect, aged 19, has already appeared in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on charges including nine counts of murder, attempted murder, and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the killings are believed to be linked to organised criminal activity.

“The shooting incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning and is believed to be linked to extortion-related crimes.”

He added one of the victims was the owner of the illegal liquor outlet.

“Of the deceased persons, one is a 43-year-old woman who was the owner of the illegal liquor outlet,” said Van Wyk.

Authorities have appealed to the public to help trace Dyasi. Anyone with information is urged to contact investigating officer Sibusiso Manqindi on 072 980 2764 or call CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
