Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest of a man in his 60s from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.
According to Thames Valley Police, the accused remains in custody.
In a statement, Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright confirmed an investigation has been opened into allegations of misconduct in public office.
"It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence," Wright said.
Wright said police will provide updates in due course.
UK media reported seeing several unmarked police vehicles outside Mountbatten-Windsor's Sandringham premises.
In October last year, he was stripped of his 'prince' title and ordered to vacate his Windsor mansion.
Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles III has been tied to American financier and child sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
According to AFP, UK police are further assessing reports which appear to link the former prince, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, to Epstein.
