The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association says the latest killing at the Nyanga terminus will not jeopardise their fragile peace agreement with Codeta.
Cata secretary-general Mandla Hermanus was speaking a day after office administrator Mlamleli Cetyana was gunned down in a container which is used as an office on Tuesday.
The gunmen fled the scene and have not yet been arrested.
Hermanus said in a statement: “Unknown suspects entered Cata’s Regional Office in Nyanga, they shot the office administrator Mr Mlamleli Cetyena, who died on the spot.
“Two other operators, who were being assisted by Mr Cetyena, also sustained gunshot wounds.
“As Cata we are shocked and dismayed by the incident.
“We are cooperating with law enforcement agencies to follow up on all possible leads to bring the culprits to book.
“Cata remains committed to the peace agreement and this incident will not jeopardise it.”
He says the incident will not affect the transport service.
“Especially during this time when learners are commencing with their end of year examinations,” he says.
A shocked resident says she ran when she saw the shooters.
“They came out of the container running. I was right there, they were running after me like I was being chased,” the woman says.
“The speed I had, I don’t know where it came from.
“People asked me what happened and I couldn’t talk, I just ran straight into a taxi.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says they are investigating murder and attempted murder cases.
“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident [on Tuesday] at about 12pm at the Nyanga taxi rank where an adult male was shot and fatally wounded and two males aged 30 and 41 shot and wounded are under investigation,” says Twigg.
“Nyanga Police were called to the crime scene where they found the victims with gunshot wounds. The adult male was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.
“The victims were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment.
“The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
Cops have arrested 27 suspects for taxi violence since the beginning of the year.
Since January, the taxi war involving Cata and Codeta has left 86 people dead and 66 injured, in a feud over the Bellville to Paarl/Mbekweni route.
A peace agreement was brokered following government intervention.
