A 12-year-old boy has died after he was shot in the chest by skollies.
The stray gang bullet hit Yonga Komanisi while he went to a park in Wallacedene to fetch his two younger brothers on Tuesday evening.
His hartseer mom Zingisa Komanisi, 37, says: “It was not long after he left the house that he was killed. The people who saw him lying in Ngculu Street, where we live, recognised him and came to call me.
“He was going to fetch his two brothers just before 8pm when the bullet hit him in the chest, close to his heart.
“We rushed with him to the Kraaifontein Day Hospital, but he died before we could get there.”
Yonga was in Grade 5 at Simonsberg Primary School in Kraaifontein.
His mom is the breadwinner of the family as his father is unemployed at the moment.
“It is very difficult for us and we are traumatised by his death,” the mom cries.
“The police came to speak to us and said they are busy following up leads to see where that stray bullet came from.”
SAPS’ Captain FC van Wyk says: “A suspect, who is a taxi owner, has been arrested. The case is not taxi-related and no firearm has been recovered. The suspect will appear in Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.”
Community leader Linda Phito says the family now have the added worry of burying their son: “It is very sad that a young boy’s life ends like this. Criminals are destroying our kids’ lives, and we must pray that this senseless killing must come to an end.”
