A well-known businessman was shot and killed in broad daylight on Jan Smuts Drive this week.
Family of Epping Market vendor, Abdul Malik Hendricks from Strandfontein, were not in a state to speak to the media when contacted, however a community activist and friend of the 50-year-old said his death is a major loss.
It is understood that Hendricks was returning home in his Mercedes Benz when he was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon.
In a video of the shooting, a Hyundai van pulls up to the robot at the Blomvlei Road and Jan Smuts Drive intersections.
Hendricks stops one vehicle’s length away from the Hyundai.
When the robot turns green, the van’s occupants jump out and run towards Hendricks, firing shots at his window.
The vendor loses control of his car and slams into a pole.
According to a source, the killers took the his money and fled, hijacking a vehicle in Induland Crescent.
The community activist, who for safety reasons asked to remain anonymous, described Hendricks as a good man who lived for his family and business.
“This is a tragedy. Every day good people are taken away from us, but this time I was genuinely shocked to learn about who the person was.”
He urged mense with information about the murder to come forward and share information with SAPS so the killers can be brought to book.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said that Lansdowne SAPS are investigating murder and armed robbery cases.
“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. Anyone with any information about this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
