Residents from Tafelsig are angry at the City of Cape Town who they say dumped dirt and rubbish on the pavement along AZ Berman Drive.
Bahia Claassen, a neighbourhood watch member, says the City needs to be held accountable for dumping vullis in public.
“The City first dumped rubbish on Friday, 21 May. At about 8am I saw this truck dumping a full load of rubbish. I was shocked and disappointed as it was happening on the field next to the road, in the open.
“I asked the driver how he can do this and he said he was told to dump the rubbish there,” says Claassen, who adds that she always volunteers to keep her community clean.
She says the driver told her the City is just filling the holes dug by other residents for sand and has grown under the road.
“I asked the driver why the City doesn’t attend to the problem and fill it with concrete and remove the rubbish if the hole is such a health hazard as he says it is.”
Claassen says the City is always fining people for illegal dumping and now they are doing the same.
Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health says: “The City can confirm that the holes are a result of illegal sand mining, posing danger of exposing underground cables and people potentially hurting themselves.
“As a preventive measure, the holes were filled with builders’ rubble (and not ordinary waste) and has been topped with topsoil.”
But Claassen says: “They are lying, it wasn’t filled with builders’ rubble but with ordinary waste and it wasn’t covered with topsoil, as the pictures illustrate.”
