AN ALLEGED gangster was shot approximately 20 times in Netreg, Bonteheuwel, on Sunday evening as rival gangs swoop in for turf.
Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie told the Daily Voice that the biggest issue around that part in the area is due to helse fight over drug turf.
McKenzie explains: “There has been a gap since Peter Jaggers was murdered. In addition to that there is the challenge around Valhalla Park and Kalksteenfontein.”
Jaggers was an alleged gang boss who had a stronghold in Netreg and was found dead in a Free State dam along with another male in October 2024 after he was reportedly kidnapped by a Colombian cartel with a ransom demand of R50 million.
According to McKenzie, what’s happening in Kalksteenfotein is starting to spread into Netreg and the murder is “really just part of saying that the rival gangs are full-on going for territory”.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says: “Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint of a shooting on the corner of Rosewood and Plumbago Streets, Bonteheuwel, on Sunday, 1 June 2025, at about 6.15pm, in which a 22-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded.
“Upon arrival on the scene the police members found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined.”
The rivalry allegedly stems from police pressure on the drug trade in Bonteheuwel by targeting the drug houses and information on where they are sold or distributed, which leads to the gangs becoming kwaad as their connections start to narrow and look for other territory.
McKenzie further stated that the motive behind the shooting incident is gang-related and that the deceased is a well-known gangster.
However there has been a high police presence in the area, with the cops working with metro police officials and law enforcement.
He further appealed to the community to continue in assisting with providing information on which spots to monitor to prevent the skollies from getting away with criminal activities.
