'HANOVER PARK IS LIKE A GRAVEYARD’

CPF have had enough of the gang violence after retired Mongrels were shot in latest incident

HANOVER Park se mense is now mooi dik of the gang violence plaguing the area, with Community Policing Forum spokesperson Kashiefa Mohammed saying the area looks like a graveyard. 

Mohammed spoke to the Daily Voice on Tuesday following the latest round of shooting in which two men - a 57-year-old and a 33-year-old - were shot and wounded on Monday night. 

“The two that were shot belonged to the Mongrels, but they are retired already. The 57-year-old guy didn’t fight anyone and wasn’t involved in gangsterism anymore, because he hung his guns up,” explained Mohammed.”

She further questioned why a retired skollie was shot and wanted to know what is happening in the community with mense living in constant fear for their lives.

Mohammed added: “It is so sad to see Hanover Park looking like a graveyard, because every day and night there are shootings.

“Our people are helpless because no help is coming into the area and our children can’t even play outside.”

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident, saying: “According to reports Philippi Police attended a crime scene at Galway Court Hanover Park, where two males aged 33 and 57 sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies. 

“The 33-year-old male sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and upper body whilst the 57-year-old male sustained a single gunshot wound to his head. Both victims were taken to medical facilities for treatment.”

He added that the motive for the incident is yet to be determined and the possibility that the incident could be gang-related cannot be ruled out.

Members from Phillippi police station are investigating two cases of attempted murder.

It’s not only Hanover Park that suffered on Monday, as the body of a 48-year-old man was found in his vehicle at the corner of Jakes Gerwel and Klipfontein Road on Monday.

Van Wyk reported: “According to reports SAPS members received a complaint of a shooting incident at Blossom Road, Athlone, and on their arrival they were informed that the victim was shot and he got into his vehicle and left. 

“A few minutes later they were informed that the victim's vehicle was found at the mentioned address. The victim was found inside the vehicle and was declared deceased by medical personnel.”

He added that the motive is believed to be gang-related, however no arrests have been made yet.
