BONTEHEUWEL was rocked by a suspected gang hit in an escalating oorlog in the small hours of Tuesday morning.
The 2.34am shooting on Karee Road left a 28-year-old ou dood after he was shot in the back and in the head.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala reported: “Bishop Lavis SAPS members attended a shooting complaint in Karee Road, Bonteheuwel on Tuesday 27 January 2026, at around 2:34am.
“Upon arrival at the scene, they found a body of a 28-year-old male on the street with gunshot wounds on his head and back. A case of murder was registered for investigation; no arrest has been made yet.”
Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie told the Daily Voice: “It was a targeted gang-related attack. The attackers approached the victim and shot him two to three times. Tragically, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
“While this incident appears to bear the hallmarks of a gang-related attack, it also fuels growing concerns and rumours of an escalating conflict between the Americans and the Fancies.”
McKenzie added that over the past few weeks, Bontas neighbourhood safety officers have been working around the clock giving tip-offs received from mense and conducting operations at various identified properties.
He said: “This sustained pressure has seemingly resulted in gang elements choosing more opportunistic times to carry out their activities.
“Our officers remain fully aware of the situation and are actively targeting key individuals and locations linked to these criminal networks.
“We urge residents to continue sharing credible and relevant information, as community cooperation remains vital in maintaining stability and safety in our neighbourhood.”
