These young ladies are ready to march and twirl their way to the top of their game, but need your support to do it.
The Atlantis meisies have qualified for the national drum majorettes championships in Joburg next month, but need R40 000 to get there and make their town, and province, proud.
The coach of the Avondale Senior Drum Majorettes says her 18-girl squad, all aged 13 to 18, have been working their socks off perfecting their moves, and also to raise enough money for the whole squad to attend.
Michelle Cramer, 22, tells Daily Voice: “ Ek is baie trots, their hard work has paid off.
“These girls are very committed, always learning from each other and they always bring a positive mindset to the practice.”
The team also made it to the finals last year, but could not attend due to a lack of funds.
The girls say being in the drummies is like being in matric, and national championship is like going to your matric ball.
Michells says: “We’ve been hosting dances, karaokes, and the girls are selling popcorn and other items at school to raise money, but we still need so much more. They’ve been competing as a team all year and it won’t be fair to just send some.”
Bridgette Farmer, 14, is one of those who will be attending nationals for the first time.
The shy girl says: “I am very excited. My mom would like me to go but she doesn’t have the income. I would be so happy if we could get the funds we needed so everyone could go to compete at national.”
