A taxi driver who was picking someone up in Khayelitsha has been shot and killed.
The incident happened on Wednesday around 10pm in Taiwan, Site C.
Police say the staff transport driver died inside the Quantum van after he was robbed. No one has been arrested for the murder.
Residents of Nyandeni Street confirm they heard gunshots, but didn’t see anything.
A woman, who refused to be named, says: “Every day there is a shooting in this area. We have even stopped being inquisitive, trying to see who was shot.”
Khayelitsha taxi association Codeta has distanced itself from the incident. This after they had threatened staff transporters not to drive in the area without consulting them first.
Last month they issued a letter warning private vehicles to stop picking up their customers.
But a few hours later they retracted the statement, saying there were several printing errors.
Codeta secretary Andile Khanyi says the latest incident had nothing to do with them.
“The shooting has got nothing to do with taxis, because no one knows about it.
“No one here at Codeta was shot, so he was not our driver.
“I know that last week one of the Bellville Codeta members was shot dead in Site C in his home. That is the only thing I know.”
Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana confirms cases of murder and robbery are being investigated.
She says cops found the deceased inside a Toyota Quantum with gunshot wounds: “He died on the scene due to his injuries. The motive for the killing is robbery and police are following up on leads in order to bring the perpetrators to book.”
