Skelms were stopped in their tracks on Friday after they burgled the Bonteheuwel Library.
Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie praised Law Enforcement officers for their sterling work in recovering the stolen property.
“The people of Bonteheuwel continued to play an active role in rooting out crime in the area,” McKenzie says.
“On Friday morning, a member of the public informed patrolling City Law Enforcement of three male suspects jumping over the library fence with bags.
“Officers chased after the suspects, two fled and one was arrested and caught with all stolen items from the library.
“As a community, we are continuing to fight crime by pulling together and ensuring that Bonteheuwel continues on its upward trajectory.”
McKenzie says the library is currently undergoing a R4 million rand upgrade which is part of the Bonteheuwel CBD upgrade.
“There was a lot of new equipment including stationery and educational items used for keeping kids off the streets. The items retrieved was handed in as evidence.
“What’s disappointing is that these are men whose brothers and sisters and probably kids have to benefit from these assets of the library, to not place them in a position to do the things they (the skelms) are doing now.”
The diewe forced entry into the library and stole stationery as well as computer equipment and toys.
Law Enforcement comment did not respond to queries by last night.
