Cape Town is getting into the festive spirit, with the city’s first citizen Dan Plato this week braving the Southeaster to test the liggies in the CBD.
This was ahead of the annual Festive Lights Switch-On festival that will take place on the Grand Parade on Sunday 2 December, between 4pm and 9.30pm.
The mayor was joined by some of the musical artists who will be performing at the free family event.
Also, stieking uit were some colourful costumed characters who lent an air of fun to the event.
Not able to join in the fun on the evening, but who will be performing on stage at the event, is Yanga Sobetwa, who was recently crowned the winner of the 2018 Idols SA competition.
Congratulating the 17-year-old from Delft on her win, Mayor Plato said: “Cape Town is rich with a diversity of talented young people and one of them has been blossoming in front of the nation’s eyes over the last few months.
“Yanga is the second Capetonian to win the singing competition for the second year running.
“This proves, yet again, that Cape Town has an abundance of talent on offer.”

Yanga says she wants to use her music to inspire young people and dreams of opening a music academy in the historically disadvantaged township.
This is also in keeping with the theme of this year’s Festive Lights Switch-On, which is #BeInspiring.
Joining Yanga on stage in two weeks’ time is an exciting line-up that includes: Emo Adams, YoungstaCPT, Shekhinah, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, DJ Eazy, Sarah Theron, Kunjalo, The Unknown Dance Crew, Robin Pieters featuring Elwira Standili and Kwesta.
The fun begins at 4pm but stiek out early to get a lekker spot and remember that surrounding roads will be closed off.
