Metrorail has expanded its train service along the southern line in Cape Town to two more train stations.
The southern line, from Retreat to Cape Town, was reopened on July 1, under Alert Level 3 of the national Coronavirus lockdown.
Now, Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott says that Muizenberg and Fish Hoek train stations will become operational.
However, weekend services remain suspended until demand warrants them.
In line with Level 2 of the national lockdown regulations, train capacity has been increased to 70% and the number of ticket sales available have been adjusted accordingly.
Scott said turnaround times at the Cape Town and Fish Hoek train stations have been extended to accommodate the sanitising of trains.
She said trains are cleaned and disinfected overnight.
Metrorail has advised commuters to wear their masks upon arrival at train stations, use the designated exits and entrances at stations and on train carriages, arrive earlier to allow time for purchasing tickets and sanitising, and hand over the correct fare to minimise the handling of cash.
Meanwhile, acting regional manager for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) Raymond Maseko said no cases of Covid-19 have been recorded at any train station or trains and Prasa’s mitigation measures have been effective.
All stations and platforms will be monitored by customer service staff and security personnel.
Minor adjustments have been made to timetables in line with operating conditions.
