Over the weekend, Aubrey Camphor, who lives in Arundel Court, received a kwaai surprise party from the Square Hill United Football Club.
The 10-year-old was diagnosed with tumours on his spine and in his chest two months ago.
His mother, Desreé, says in May, Aubrey fell while playing soccer with his friends at the park. She says while he was in pain, he never complained.
“Then I saw he couldn’t walk and we took him to Retreat Day Hospital. They transferred him to Victoria Hospital and then Red Cross where they did a scan,” the mom explains.
“They found out he has a tumour on his spine and an even bigger tumour in his chest. We were so worried and they told us he must go for an operation.
“But the cancer was in his nerves and it affected his knees so they put him in a wheelchair afterwards. They told us the cancer was at stage 4 already.

“The tumours were removed and he is now going for chemo,” Desree adds.
Square Hill United’s spokesperson, Terence Hermanus, says despite being in a wheelchair Aubrey showed up at every practice at the Rooikrans sports complex in Grassy Park.
He says the club was very impressed with the young player’s dedication and in just a few weeks after his operation, he was running around Arundel Court playing soccer again.
“Aubrey was the top goal scorer in his age category last year and when we visited him in hospital he was feeling down.
“We told him about the new kit and to help him a little, we raised funds to have his tracksuit made and personalised with his name.
“The club is 50 years old this year and our theme is: ‘Your Child, is My Child’. We knew the family was struggling, so we reached out to them.”

Mom Desreé says: “Ek het net gehuil. We were so happy because we know we couldn’t afford to do it for him. Ons is baie dankbaar.”
A shy Aubrey tells the Daily Voice: “It was nice, I was surprised.”
