The tournament, arranged by Area South Mayco member Eddie Andrews and the Mitchells Plain Netball Union, saw 16 teams participate in more than 30 matches to take the top spot.
Girls and women from across the Plain competed in two age groups - under 15 and under 25.
Andrews says, along with the union, they started planning the tournament three months ago.
The aim, he says, was to celebrate young women in the Plain and use netball as a catalyst for change.
“The tournament comes in the light of the recent spike in violence, especially targeting girls,” says Andrews.
“Netball is synonymous with girls and this tournament aims to raise the plight of young girls in our communities by creating safe spaces where young girls can be supported, encouraged and celebrated.”
The tournament also included an exhibition match between Andrews and his team from the City of Cape Town against the union’s team.
The spanne included women and men, who were not scared to flash their boude.
“Unfortunately for us, the union’s team played really well and the City lost the match. They beat us 11-5, but we had so much fun and received a lot of love from the crowd,” said a delighted Andrews.
Emotions ran high as the semifinals got underway.
“Kom nou, meisies! Wys hulle,” shouted a woman.
Igshaan Brenner, chairperson of the Mitchells Plain Netball Union, says netball is a big deal innie Plain and they have more than 700 members.
“If you think of all the places they could have been today, on the streets either doing drugs or drinking alcohol, you can see why this tournament is a great initiative. We are really proud to be a part of this event.”
The winning teams - U15 winners Kansas City and the U25 winners Goldhill - received medals and trophies.
Andrews says the tournament is set to become an annual event and next year they plan to include rugby matches.
