HIT: MTN store in Vangate Mall HIT: MTN store in Vangate Mall
But in the latest incident, at Vangate Mall on Saturday, the brazen gang did not get away with any loot.
Police were called to the MTN store in Vangate Mall in Athlone on Friday night where two men in a blue VW Polo attempted carrying out a robbery.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut says: “The circumstances surrounding an attempted robbery at a cellular telephone store in a mall in Athlone are being investigated.
“The incident occurred on Friday night. No one has been arrested as yet.”
This is the second hit on the store at this
particular mall; last year robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cellphones.
This is also the fifth MTN store to be hit by robbers in the Cape since October last year, with stores in Ottery mall, Kenilworth Centre and Westgate Mall also targeted.
After the robbery took place at Kenilworth Centre on 23 May, cops arrested four suspects between the ages of 22 and 28 years old.
MTN’s Bridget Bhengu did not respond to comment regarding the latest robbery.
Two weeks ago, she said MTN was working with cops to clamp down on skelms targeting their stores.
“MTN appeals to the members of the public to alert the authorities about any suspicious activity and suspected perpetrators of crime,” she said.
