A popular Mitchells Plain hawker has been killed by suspected hijackers on his way home from mosque.
Emran Carelse from Portlands was driving on Morgenster Road near Westgate Mall on Wednesday night when two unknown men forced open the door of his white Toyota Corolla at a red traffic light on Jakes Gerwel Drive.
The dad of five was robbed and stabbed and later died from his wounds.
His daughter Aaishah Daniels, 33, says a Law Enforcement officer notified the family.
“It was around 8.30pm when we heard about the incident.
“My mom received the call about my father’s stabbing and then a police car came to fetch her,” says Aaishah.
She says her father was on his way home from a mosque in Rylands when he was attacked.
“While driving on Morgenster Road, an off-duty Law Enforcement officer saw his car was not moving when the robot turned green,” Aaishah tells the Daily Voice.
“The other cars drove around the car, the officer put on blue lights and then two people got out and ran.
“When the officer went to the car, he discovered that my father had been stabbed in the chest.”
Aaishah says: “He was still alive and he told the officer to call my mom,” she explains.
“The knife went through a major artery, he died on the way to hospital.”
His eldest daughter Warda Jinoo, 42, says: “He was not a person who would let people take away his car. I think he got stabbed when he was trying to fight back.
“I understand from what was said at the scene that there was an attempted hijacking.
“No one knows how the attackers got into the car, but then they jumped out after stabbing him and they only took his wallet, which had no money in it.”
Aaishah says her father was well-known in the area: “He was a hawker at the Town Centre and then after he was selling goods in the neighbourhood.
“He was a loving father and grandfather, and he will be missed a lot.”
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and says the suspects are unknown.
