There were hundreds of happy faces as kids from all over the Cape Flats enjoyed some
lekker boeka treats in Thornton on Sunday night.
The Thornton Islamic Society hosted 300 children from
various religions at the Poplar Street Mosque for a “breaking of the fast” event.
The children were treated to lekker chicken akni, dates, fruit, savouries and a nice party.
Spokesman Riaad Isaacs said the children were brought in by bus from Valhalla Park and other areas with the assistance of the Sport Stepping Stones (SSS) community organisation
in Manenberg.
The community of
Thornton came together to
prepare snacks and treats, and asked the SSS to get someone to prepare the food.

Isaacs said it is of utmost importance that a spirit of giving is restored to communities and also showing children that there is more to life than the daily
battles of gangs, poverty and drugs they face in their
communities.
The children were bussed in from about 5pm and they were seated in long lines inside the Thornton Islamic Society Mosque.
The iftar kicked off with a short dhikr before boeka time which takes place shortly before 6pm.
“We had a dhikr before we served the meal. The children were excited and we have
really put a lot into giving the kids a lekker meal.
