The EFF cancelled its scheduled meeting with Education MEC Debbie Schäfer on Thursday and are going ahead with its protest outside Brackenfell High School today.
The party has held anti-racism demonstrations since accusations emerged of a whites-only matric ball last month, which resulted in a violent clash with residents last week.
The aim of yesterday’s meeting was to discuss the party’s concerns about Brackenfell High School.
Schäfer said: “Their representatives have said that they are too busy preparing for their protest on Friday to spare even one hour to discuss solutions to what is allegedly the reason for the protest.
“The EFF desperately wants a confrontation outside the school. Do not give in to their tactics. SAPS and other Law Enforcement authorities are making extensive preparations.”
The MEC again urged residents of Brackenfell not to come to the school: “Please, let us not give the EFF the attention and confrontation they are so desperately seeking.”
EFF provincial chairperson Melikhaya Xego said that they cancelled the meeting because Schäfer has already denied that there is a racism issue at the school.
He said: “Everyone knows that Schäfer and [Premier Alan] Winde do not have the interest of black people at heart.
“The situation at Brackenfell is something they denied in the beginning and now that it serves their narrative they’re involved and suddenly want to speak about peace.
“Our march will continue as planned as what happened to our members last week is not something to be taken lightly.”
On Tuesday, the EFF posted on social media that they will “descend and ensure that nothing operates”.
