It’s back to school for hundreds of Bonteheuwel parents who have signed up with the Hopeful Leaders Night School which launched their third campus this week.
Modderdam High School buzzed with excitement on Wednesday night as over 300 eager parents showed up to register.
The initiative started by single mom and community activist, Yumna Alexander, was launched in Manenberg in 2020 with the aim of equipping parents who were unable to complete their matric due to their socio-economic circumstances.
This year Yumna and her team partnered with Crystal High School in Hanover Park and opened a second night school.
Due to the success of these two schools, Yumna says she was inundated with requests for a school in Bonteheuwel.
“Modderdam High School partnered with us to provide a venue and on Wednesday night we registered over 300 students,” she says.
“Among the group were mostly moms and dads between the ages of 30 and 40 who were keen to finish their matric.
“It is hard for many of our parents as they cannot afford the travelling and don’t have funds for private colleges.”
The school offers classes from Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 8.30pm where students pay R15 a lesson.
Subjects available are business studies, maths literacy, religious studies, history and Afrikaans.
“We are starting with these five subjects as we rely on teachers to volunteer.
“We are calling on teachers to come and assist us.
“Classes are set to start in November,” adds Yumna.
