Metro police have arrested two alleged petrol diewe who they say can be linked to a string of housebreaking charges and the theft of fuel at local petrol stations.
Deputy Metro Police Chief, Annalene Marais, says the breakthrough came on Friday when they received a tip-off about a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Rondebosch and Woodstock.
When the officers found the vehicle, a blue Nissan
Hardbody bakkie standing in St. Peter’s Square in Observatory, they arrested two suspects, aged 42 and 31, both from Athlone.
Inside the car, officers found housebreaking and car breaking equipment.
She says the suspects were also linked to two cases of the theft of fuel, after filling up at petrol stations in Rondebosch and Woodstock and not making any payments.
In addition, they are also believed to be part of three housebreaking incidents
in the Rondebosch and Woodstock communities.

Marais explains: “On Women’s Day, Metro Police Special Operations officers were patrolling in the Claremont area when they received information about a suspected stolen vehicle in the Rondebosch and Woodstock area.
“Officers were requested to assist in the search of the vehicle, which eventually reaped rewards.
“A blue Nissan Hardbody was found in St. Peters Square in Observatory.
“Two male suspects, aged 42 and 31 respectively, from Athlone were arrested while car breaking instruments and housebreaking implements was also found on the back of the vehicle.
“Further investigations revealed the suspects were also wanted on two charges of theft of fuel, where they would fill up at various service stations and then drive off without paying.
“[They’re also linked to] three cases of housebreaking in the Claremont and Rondebosch and Woodstock areas.”
