TEAM SPCA cyclists raised an impressive R565 969 for our furry friends during the Argus Cape Town Cycle Tour.
A zany span of 102 mense got into the saddle to put their mettle to the pedal last Sunday.
Teaming up with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA were raising funds in a drive to rescue more honde living in heartbreaking conditions in Cape Town.
One rider, 19-year-old Gidian Jacobs took the idea of “breaking chains” to the next level, as he rode the 109km race on a chainless unicycle.
After six hours in the saddle, he says: “Riding the race on a unicycle was certainly a challenge, but it’s just a few hours of discomfort in hopes of sparing an animal from a lifetime of suffering.”
Kendal Krober and Diederick Kruisinga took on the route on a tandem bike, because four legs are, of course, better than two.
SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham says of the drive: “The results of their efforts are incredible. R565 959.79 means real dogs, in real pain, are getting real freedom.
“Every cyclist, every donor, every cheer from the side-lines - made this a winning event. The entire SPCA family, two-legged and four-legged, is beyond grateful.”
Jackie Quail, Shelter Channel Manager & Pet Parent at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, adds: “We are incredibly proud to support Team SPCA.
“Just like the cyclists, the SPCA team is driven by passion, endurance, and heart.
“The commitment that fuels SPCA inspectors and the riders also drives our mission to give every pet the healthiest life possible.”
