A teacher at a Grassy Park school has been suspended after campaigning against wearing masks, claiming it was harmful.
The Two Oceans Leadership Academy teacher organised a picket outside the school on Monday, where she was joined by parents who supported her demands to stop the wearing of masks by children and teachers.
The teacher did not want to be identified and referred queries to her lawyer Reyno de Beer from Liberty Fighters Network (LFN), who called her suspension “totally unfair”.
“Employees are guided by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and we have evidence of the dangers of prolonged wearing of masks presents, the lungs need fresh air,” he said.
LFN took the government to court in June last year challenging the constitutionality and validity of the lockdown regulations, including the wearing of masks.
“The High Court ruled in our favour that the regulations promulgated by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are unconstitutional and invalid.”
The school decided to postpone the disciplinary hearing until they get feedback from the WCED.
De Beer said they will be heading to the Constitutional Court to request that the Disaster Management Act be declared invalid.
“In the absence of government urgently conducting independent and conclusive research about this concern, LFN says that no one can be forced to wear a mask unless prescribed by a registered health practitioner.”
The Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said private and public schools are guided by the same rules set by the national Department of Education.
The school declined to comment as a disciplinary hearing against the teacher is underway.
