Angry parents and learners of Pinedene Primary School in Ravensmead took to the streets on Monday to protest against a plan by the department to repair a school building they say is defective and ready to collapse.
For several weeks now 13 classes consisting of more than 500 learners have been getting lessons under the trees as parents fear for their safety in the broken classrooms.
A School Governing Body (SGB) representative says despite being alerted to problems with the crumbling building in 2017, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has not repaired the building.
“An engineer came and did a walk-through and said it was safe, but parents are demanding proof that tests were conducted,” the rep says.
“They are refusing to allow their children to be taught in class because of all the structural problems.
“Currently we have children and teachers getting sick because they are now exposed to the elements outside.”

Dad Maurice Marlie, 32, says he is gatvol of the department’s promises while his daughter refuses to go to school.
“My daughter is only seven and she is now out in the sun the whole day. When she gets home her nose is running and other children have allergy problems.
“WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, says although construction work is due to start in March, their engineer has declared the building safe.
“The district director requested that an engineer’s inspection be carried out. Based on the engineer’s experience and expertise the recommendation indicates that the building is safe for occupation.”
