Cops chase down suspects with gun on Mew Way

COPS busted two would-be boewe with an unlicensed gun in Khayelitsha. 

Members of Maitland Flying Squad arrested the duo after a potential victim gave them the slip on the Mew Way footbridge and reported them. 

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie reports: “Members of Maitland Flying Squad were doing patrols in Khayelitsha on Monday, 07 April 2025 when they were informed by a  complainant about two unknown suspects who attempted to rob him, moments earlier on Mew Way bridge, Khayelitsha. 

“The complainant was able to provide a good description of the attire the suspects wore.

“The members immediately initiated a search for the suspects whom they found on the N2 off-ramp from Mew Way.

“Upon noticing the members approaching, the suspects ran but were apprehended and searched. 

“A pistol with two rounds of ammunition was found on one of the suspects.  

“Both suspects, aged 36 and 43, were arrested and detained at Khayelitsha SAPS for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. 

“They are scheduled to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court, once they have been charged.”

It brings the number of suspects arrested for being in the illegal possession of firearms nationwide to 105. 

Meanwhile, SAPS released stats for the week from the end to March ending on Monday, 6 April. 

They reported 222 drug dealers were arrested in the past week, majority of these suspects were arrested in the Western Cape (71)

Of the 1 725 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs, 821 were gevang in the Western Cape.
