Parow police are hunting for five men who robbed the Shoprite store on Voortrekker Road yesterday morning.
The skollies barged into the store, stabbed a security guard in the eye and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says the suspects are still at large.
“Five unidentified armed suspects perpetrated the business robbery, they threatened the employees and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
“One of the security guards was stabbed and a case of assault with grievous bodily harm was opened for investigation.
“Suspects are yet to be arrested,” says Rwexana.
According to the Shoprite supermarket chain, the security guard sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical attention.
It says trauma counselling has been arranged for affected employees and contracted personnel involved.
“We denounce acts of crime committed against our stores, which ultimately puts the safety of employees at risk,” Shoprite said in a statement.
The chain is appealing to anyone with information regarding the incident to call 0800 118 879 or to inform Parow police.
Initial reports indicated that the stolen money was for Sassa grant payments scheduled to resume today. However, Sassa did not respond to queries.
