Atlantis paraplegic singer Nikita Scott, 19, who appealed to Daily Voice readers for help with an electric wheelchair, has received one from a good Samaritan.
The teen needed a new chair but because it cost anywhere between R20 000 and R60 000, her family wasn’t able to afford it.
This week, a donor gifted her a brand new chair that cost R36 000.
Nikita was injured in a car accident at 17 years old.
She had just started her first term in Grade 10 and got a lift home with her friend and as their car stood at a red robot, they were hit by a swerving car.
“I woke up in hospital after a two-week coma,” she says.
“I was paralysed from my hips down.”
She may have lost her ability to walk but her voice could still be heard, and the meisie started taking part in singing competitions, where her family would carry her on and off the stage.
Nikita says the new wheelchair will open doors for her.
“The donor , who doesn’t want to be identified, saw my story in the Daily Voice and then called me.
“It’s so exciting, I can fold the chair, it can be charged, I can control the speed, it has a hooting device which is cool.”
“What is really special to me is that I can now help myself, I don’t need to call anyone to assist me.”
Mom Caroline Scott adds: “I am really grateful to the Daily Voice for getting her story out.
“This chair took my child to another level.
“Nikita went to a shop for the first time [recently] after four years…alone!”
