Police have arrested a 24-year-old man who they believe is behind a spate of robberies of Uber drivers in Mitchells Plain.
Taufeeq Roland is expected to make his next appearance at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where he is supposed to be participate in an identity parade.
Roland is facing charges of armed robbery, abduction and carjacking.
Police sources reveal the suspect was traced to an address in Tafelsig that he used to request Uber rides from.
Cops also recovered a stash of stolen cellphones at the residence and arrested Roland.
Police spokesperson, Siyabulela Malo, says Roland is in police
custody.
“This office can confirm that a 24-year-old male has been arrested in connection with robberies of Uber drivers. The charges range from carjacking to armed robbery and abduction. The suspect is allegedly linked to seven case dockets of this nature. He is currently in detention (and) is due in court on Wednesday, 3 July," says Malo.
Last month an Uber driver and another person were killed during a hijacking and two suspects were arrested in Goodwood.
The robbers had attempted to flee the scene in a Toyota Etios and jumped the robots before colliding with three other cars, a BMW, KIA and a Toyota Conquest.
Seven people were injured, including a child.
It is believed one of the men had attempted to stab a cop who had arrived at the scene.
Shots were fired and two men died, one being the Uber driver.
