Rail commuters travelling on the Northern line on Friday suffered heavy delays after a youth was hit by a train.
On Friday morning, a young man died after he landed underneath a train at Parow station.
The lifeless body of the 19-year-old, believed to be a pupil, was found between the platform and the train track.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirmed the incident and says the young man tried jumping onto the moving train, but missed.
“An inquest docket has been opened for investigation following the death of a 19-year-old man at the Parow [Train] Station on Friday at 7.05am.
“According to the available information the deceased male was late and he tried to jump into the moving train.
“He fell and landed under the train. An inquest case was registered for investigation,” Van Wyk said.
Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, confirms the incident, saying: “Preliminary reports indicate the tragedy played itself out on platform 4 at Parow station at 07:20 when the learner ran and attempted to board a departing train.
“Emergency services were called to the scene, but were unable to revive him.”
Scott said “two close family members of the deceased were on the scene. Metrorail expressed their condolences to the family”.
