A community activist from Ottery says he isn’t happy with the City of Cape Town’s plans to turn the Strandfontein Pavilion’s parking lot into a “spinning area for car burnouts”.
Keith Blake, 62, says he was fishing at Broken Road at the Pavilion last week when he spotted City officials scouting the area.
“I was fishing at my favourite spot when I noticed two City of Cape Town officials and asked them what was the purpose of their visit, and they stated it was regarding an application the City received for cars to do burnouts on the parking area, just a few metres from the beach,” he says.
Keith says he was upset over this as the Pavilion is a family friendly area and a favourite spot with anglers.
“How can they want to consider this area? Why can’t they go to Killarney or Camps Bay?”

Years ago, the City placed concrete slabs in the parking area due to illegal spinning and dicing.
However, Councillor Zahid Badroodien of the City, confirmed the City was considering the Pavilion parking area for spinning.
“At present spinning is growing motorsport across the city,” he says.
“Spinning events occur unsupervised and without approval at a number of
public facilities.
“The City notes that spinning receives a large amount of support from the Mitchells Plain community.”
CONSIDERATION: Strandfontein Pavilion has been earmarked for a potential spinning area
Badroodien says an assessment was conducted to identify suitable alternative and safe venues away from residential properties, but still close enough for mense to get to easily.
He says the Lentegeur Sports Field was also being considered but no final decisions have been made yet.
