A store was robbed of cellphones on Sunday morning at a brand new mall that recently opened in Mitchells Plain.
Two armed robbers went into the Cash Crusaders at the new Watergate Mall on the corner of AZ Berman and the R300, jumping over the counter and grabbing cellphones before running away.
Witnesses say the skelms aimed at the staff with their firearms and “warned them to cooperate or die”.
Panicked staff set off the smoke alarm and the robbers, spooked by the noise, only managed to take 10 cellphones, before fleeing the shop.
Witnesses say the boewe got into separate cars, “a silver VW Golf GTI and a white Renault”. Police said nobody was injured in the incident and no shots were fired.
The registration number for one of the vehicles is CA 272975.
Shoppers at the mall slammed the owners for choosing a “crime hotspot” to erect the mall.
“This is then where they hijack cars and rob people. This mall is really at the edge of the world and nobody who comes here will feel safe. They really need to increase security now already if they want it to be a success,” says a new shopper.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut, confirms the incident and says no injuries were reported.
“The circumstances surrounding a robbery at a retail store situated in a mall in Mitchells Plain are being investigated, following an incident [yesterday] at 10.10am. Two suspects fled with cellular telephones and are yet to be arrested.”
