Two cops will appear in court after they allegedly allowed a drug dealer to walk free - with his stash of drugs - after they arrested him earlier this month.
The cops, a 25-year-old constable and a 41-year-old police reservist, were arrested at Kensington Police Station on Tuesday.
Sources reveal the dirty duo have been caught out in a sting operation.
They are expected to appear at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
Police say the two had been on duty on 1 April and had conducted a search at the home of a mert armed with a warrant.
At the house in Third Street, Kensington, the cops found cash, believed to be R26 000, and mandrax tablets.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, explains: “However, after arriving at the police station only a portion of the tablets seized were booked in and the suspect was released without being charged.”
Last month, former Community Policing Forum chairperson Cheslyn Steenberg and now the chairperson of Frontiers, a community organisation, asked for Kensington cops to be replaced as they were corrupt.
“Frontiers has decided to petition the national SAPS Commissioner and the President of the Republic of South Africa to have the Kensington SAPS totally overhauled.
“In recent months, the spate of gang violence increased.”
In 2006, former Kensington cop, Sydney Simpson, was caught on video jolling with alleged American gang boss, Igsaan “Sanie” American, at a nightclub.
