Police say a gunman who was caught on CCTV camera chasing a 19-year-old man into a building and then pumping him full of
bullets has been arrested.
A shocking video of the shooting, which took place in 14th Avenue in Leonsdale, Elsies River, on 22 October at about 6.30pm, shows how the murder took place.
The 22-second video shows a man running past the building, which appears to be a shop, closely followed by a second man, who runs into the building but trips over the iron railing of the gate and falls.
The killer rushes inside and pumps at least eight bullets into him before fleeing the scene.
Sources in the community reveal shootings have increased as protection money is being demanded by gang members from spaza shop owners.
At the crime scene, community members and family of the victim were reluctant to speak, saying they fear for their lives.
KILLED: 19-year-old victim
Community leader, Imraahn Mukaddam, says police are failing to protect people: “There is a lack of strategy on how to combat crime. There is no plan.”
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says a 38-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting after he had jumped into a car and drove off.
He says a case of murder has been opened for investigation while the motive for the shooting is unknown.
“The members were informed that an unknown man who was driving a white vehicle pulled over and he stepped out of his vehicle and he started to fire several shots at the victim,” Van Wyk says.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigation and a suspect, a 38-year-old man, was arrested and is expected to make a court appearance once charged.”
