A musician’s dream became a reality on Saturday when he opened his own music school in the heart of the Cape Flats.
In August, The Daily Voice brought you the story of local guitarist Cameron Ward, who had a vision of starting a school to invest into his community.
Cameron, 32, who moved back to Cape Town in August, spent 10 years in Johannesburg where he worked full-time alongside top artists such as Hugh Masekela, Mi Casa, Lira, Judith Sephuma and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
The Cameron Ward Music Foundation hosted its Open Day at the YMCA Rotary Camp in Strandfontein, where 50 students signed up to join the school.
Cameron from Lotus River says his mission is to take youth off the streets and instill in them a love for music.
“Our job is to better the lives of our people in the Cape Flats through music.
“We also want to let our youth know that there is more to life than drugs, alcohol, abuse and gangsterism,” he says.
“I believe in our people and I believe that our Cape Flats is destined for greatness.”
The school currently has 50 members but is inviting more to join.
Cameron says: “All classes will be taking place at the YMCA Rotary Camp in Strandfontein on Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm to 8pm weekly.”
“The music school offers lessons on guitar, bass guitar, piano, drums and vocals.”
Cameron says he will have teachers joining him for the classes.
The oldest student is 60-year-old Rowan Malan and the youngest is seven-year-old Micah Jacobs.
