Residents say the area resembled the Wild Wild West on Saturday evening when skollies open fired on cops who returned fire.
Three officers were wounded in the shootout and rushed to hospital. The window of one police vehicle was also shattered in the shootout.
On Sunday, police said the trio were in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
Police were in the area after two people, believed to be gang members, were killed earlier on Saturday.
A 30-year-old man was shot and wounded in Garda Place just before 4pm. Minutes later a 32-year-old man was shot and killed in Lucern Place.
The three constables, who were wounded, were part of a team that went into Hanover Park at about 5.30pm to investigate the murders.
The officers each had one gunshot wound - one was hit in the right hip, one in the right buttock and the other was hit in the right side of his abdomen.
The cops are said to be recovering well from their injuries after undergoing operations to remove the bullets.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed the incident and said more cops have been deployed to the area.
“On Saturday, at around 5.30pm while police members reacted to shooting incidents which occurred earlier in the Hanover Park area, they came under fire,” he says.
“Three SAPS constables were wounded and admitted to hospital where they are being treated. Additional forces have been deployed to the area and a stern approach is being applied to quell the violence in the area.”
He confirmed two men were shot and killed, but that no arrests have been made yet.
“Earlier on Saturday at around 3.45pm, a 30-year-old male was shot and wounded in Garda Place, and at 4pm, a 32-year-old male was shot and killed in Lucern Place in Hanover Park.
“The circumstances surrounding all these cases are currently under investigation.

Principal Communications Officer for Emergency Medical and Forensic Pathology Services, Robert Daniels, said services to Hanover Park have been suspended due to gang violence.
“EMS is not currently entering the area since SAPS are not entering the area and SAPS provide EMS with the required escort service.”
A community worker in the area says people are upset and traumatised.
“The fact that EMS will not enter our area is very disturbing. The community at the moment is very tense and people are extremely upset. The fact that good cops have to suffer because of this [gang violence] is very upsetting,” she said.
