A Grade 11 learner attending Cedar High School in Mitchells Plain has been left in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times while on his way home from school on Tuesday afternoon.

Local Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Norman Jantjies said the learner was stabbed in the lung, arm and head.

Jantjies explains: “He was allegedly stabbed by two former learners from the same school. According to reports, it is not known whether the victim is part of any grouping but the alleged perpetrators are apparently known to be members of a gang.

"His situation is quite critical so he's receiving treatment at a local hospital.

"Unfortunately, this is not the first time that we've had gang activity associated with this and other schools in Mitchells Plain.

"We trust that SAPS and other law enforcement agencies will increase visibility in the area.

"As the CPF, we wish that government will endorse and support the gang intervention strategy that is being developed by local stakeholders so that we can begin to see real change in our areas.

"We furthermore urge the City of Cape Town to fast track the installation of surveillance cameras in Mitchells Plain and open the planned operations room in the town centre.”

Bronagh Hammond from the Western Cape Education Department said the Western Cape Education Department is aware of the incident.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said an assault to cause grievous bodily harm case was registered for further investigation.

He reports: “Mitchells Plain police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a stabbing incident on Tuesday afternoon, 22 April 2025, on the corner of Weltevrede and Spine Roads, where a 17-year-old learner was stabbed.

"According to reports the victim was walking home when he was approached by two suspects who attacked him. The victim sustained stab wounds to his body and was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. Arrests are yet to be made.”

He urged anyone with any information about this incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
