N2 GATEWAY residents are reeling in shock after a 19-year-old teen was shot and killed and his 56-year-old mother wounded inside their house during a robbery on Sunday night.

The incident took place at 8.50pm and is believed to be the home of a taxi owner.

It is alleged that the father was pulling into the driveway at his home in Drakensberg Street when two unidentified armed men gun pointed the family.

The suspects demanded a firearm and belongings from the family.

The son was shot in the head and the mother was transported to hospital for treatment. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the shooting and said that Delft police are investigating a case of murder and a case of attempted murder.

Van Wyk reports, “Delft police registered a murder and attempted murder case following a shooting incident on 25 May 2025 at 8.50pm at a premises in Drakensberg Street, N2 Gateway, Delft, where a 19-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded (gunshot wound to the head) and his mother aged 56 injured.

"The injured victim was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The son was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. According to reports, the father of the deceased was parking his vehicle, when two unidentified males came in at the gate and pointed them with firearms.

"The suspects demanded a firearm and belongings from them. The father heard [gun] shots and saw his son and wife being shot. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. The motive is believed to be robbery.”

Community leader Charles George said that it is not shocking anymore to hear of a shooting in Delft.

George says: “The crime stats in Delft speak for itself. We are definitely not winning the war in crime and if you look at the stats, it is getting worse and not better. There are a lot of factors that are influencing the stats.

"The new normal in Delft is for three to four people to be shot in Delft, it is not a surprise anymore. People who get robbed, mugged and hijacked don’t report these kinds of crimes anymore because they have no faith in the police anymore.”
