A trainee inspector was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by heartless skelms as he respond to a distress call about a severely injured pony found along the N2 on Sunday.

The Animal Welfare Society (AWS) of SA said that when the trainee arrived at the scene near Cape Town International Airport, she and the gentleman who reported the incident were robbed of their belongings.

AWS reports: “Despite this frightening ordeal, neither of them left the pony's side. They stayed with the animal, who had suffered a broken leg and multiple puncture wounds, until help arrived.

“As soon as we were notified, additional team members were dispatched to the scene. With the urgent assistance of the Cart Horse Protection Association, the pony received immediate care.

"We later discovered that the pony had been stolen the night before, and we were able to track down the devastated owner.”

Unfortunately the pony had to be humanely euthanised as there was nothing more that could have been done to save the animal, however the organisation thanked a male motorist who stopped to assist.

City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason adds: "We can confirm Law Enforcement Animal Control Unit officers arrived on scene just after the robbery took place and remained on scene until the distressed Animal was euthanized and the Animal Welfare officers were safely escorted from the scene."

AWS adds: “We are also incredibly grateful to law enforcement and their animal Control Team for their swift and professional response.
