THE provincial department of health is in the process of transferring a frail wheelchair-bound patient to a new long-care facility after a Good Samaritan saw him wheeled out at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Imraan Isaacs who was found stranded by a member of the public who intervened when she saw the extremely ill-looking patient had been left on the side of the road on 2 June.

The woman who asked to remain anonymous explained to the Daily Voice: “I intervened after what I had seen and was not going to walk past and let a frail, 31kg, emanciated, extremely ill patient be left on the side of the road.

After wheeling him back into the hospital, the woman said Imraan was assessed by a nurse and doctor on duty who agreed that he was not fit and able to be discharged.

Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness spokesperson Dwayne Evans told the Daily Voice that Imraan was formally discharged following a medical assessment.

Evans explains: “While he was being assisted by a hospital porter to the designated transport area, a member of the public raised concerns and requested that he be taken back to the Emergency Centre.

“He was reviewed by the medical team the following morning once they were informed that he had returned to the ward.

“He is currently still at the hospital, awaiting placement in an appropriate facility.”

Evans adds: “Our focus remains on ensuring Mr Isaacs receives the appropriate support as he transitions to a longer-term care setting.”
