THE Durbanville Majorettes Club (DMC) was crowned winners at this year’s Federation of Dance, Drill, Cheerleading and Majorettes (FDDCMWC) Western Cape Provincial Championships and are now out to defend their national crown in Klerksdorp from 11-17 July.
However, the road to nationals comes with significant financial demands and due to ongoing financial constraints, the club is appealing for assistance to help raise the necessary funds of R50 000 to attend the championship and represent the Western Cape with pride.
DMC is an independent majorette club based at Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein and was founded in 2019 with a vision to provide accessible, inclusive opportunities for learners to participate in the sport of majorettes.
Today, the club proudly trains kids from Grade R to tertiary students, and now have their sights set on the FDDCMSA National Championships, set to take place at Hoërskool Wesvalia next month.
Founder Yvonne Viljoen said: “Our total squad of 36 beautiful, talented athletes comprise of incredibly, hard-working girls from all walks of life, aged between seven and 13 years old, who practice up to 14 hours per week, inclusive of Saturdays, public holidays and school holidays.
“The reality of our socioeconomic climate increases the challenges facing underprivileged communities and further hinder access to dance drill, cheerleading and majorettes, therefore making the sport available only to a minority of children.”
