GOLDEN Dish has cleared up concerns over their famous gatsby and chip dite.
The legendary Gatesville fast-food spot issued an apology to mense for an error in an announcement about their potato-based offerings on Tuesday.
A post on their Instagram account read: “Due to a nationwide shortage of potatoes, you may notice limited availability or changes to our usual potato offerings. We understand this may be an inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this issue with our suppliers.”
However, a manager told the Daily Voice that it was not a potato shortage, but rather on the quality of potatoes they source around this time of year.
Owner Mr Rafaq Parker then confirmed that they are not only sukkelling with aartappels, but also with processed meat like viennas and polony due to supply chain issues.
He explained: “Unfortunately the message went out wrong.
“We are having a price increase after about three years. The cost of meat and processed meat products all went up in price. There were two raw meat increases this year, three byproduct increases this year.
“We haven’t had an increase for just over three years, our shop also shut down for seven months so it’s difficult to try and make things work for the benefit of our customers.
“It’s not a potato shortage as such, but a good quality potato. That should have been the message, and it’s only because of one omitted word ‘quality’.
“You realise you say one thing to somebody and notice that you slipped up.”
Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo confirmed to IOL that South Africans don’t to worry about running out of spuds.
Sihlobo said: “There is no shortage of potatoes in South Africa. Our supplies are healthy.”
The restaurant added that in order to keep providing quality food to Golden Dish customers price increases will be implemented within the next 10 days, however Parker could not give an exact date.
He added: “We apologise to our customers profoundly that it was the wrong information, but we can assure our customers that we are here always considering their pockets and always putting the best on the table.”
He said they appreciate all the customers who come from all over to have their famous Steak Masala Gatsby.
The price of Masala Steak Gatsby is currently R195, and other favourites like Chicken Fullhouse Gatsby and a Combo Full House will set you back R200 and R210.
