THE 'naked body' of Johannes Titus, 64 was found on Tuesday morning on an open field with 'minor wounds' behind Boards of Africa in Philippi after he was declared missing on Monday, 14 July.

Johannes, known as Hannes, left his home in Athburg Road on 1 July and never returned. He suffered from memory loss, however police say that a post mortem will be conducted as the cause of his death has not yet been determined.

Playing a crucial role collaborating with Saps and guiding the family to the scene is Fight Against Crime South Africa (FACSA), who said that they are unaware of the individual who discovered the body of Johannes Titus.

“We had been in contact with his son, gathering information to create a missing persons poster, which we shared on social media to help reunite him with his family," said FACSA.

"Shortly after, we received a tip about a body found behind Boards of Africa in Phillipi, near the police station. We collaborated with the authorities and directed the son to the location, where he confirmed the body was his father's. The son reported that the naked body had minor wounds.

"The case is currently under investigation, with no leads yet. We're deeply disturbed by the manner of Johannes's murder, given his age and memory loss. It's concerning that the perpetrators seemed to take advantage of his vulnerable state. We're puzzled why they didn't approach the nearby police station instead.

"This incident marks the second elderly person murdered in just five days. We urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice, ensuring these heinous crimes don't become a trend.

"FACSA extends its sincerest condolences to the families and prays for their comfort during this difficult time. We'll continue to bring you news from our communities, shining a light on important issues.”

Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk said Philippi Police attended to the scene and opened an inquest for further investigation.

“This office can confirm that during the early hours of Tuesday (morning) 15 July 2025 at approximately 07:00 the body of an unidentified male believed to be in his sixties was found on an open field next to Govan Mbeki offramp from Jakes Gerwel Drive, said Van Wyk.

Philippi Police attended to the scene and opened an inquest for further investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Police is urging that anyone who has information pertaining the deceased or the incident to come forward.”

Attempts by the Daily Voice to reach out to his son before deadline was unsuccessful.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to kindly contact the investigation officer Detective Sergeant Bangile Mhlakaza at 021 690 1517 or 082 4692706, alternatively information can be given to Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App.
