THERE was Madiba Magic all over the Cape as cops, community leaders and young soccer stars all rolled up their sleeves to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

In Grassy Park, community worker Beryl Williams, better known as “Aunty Girly,” teamed up with a powerhouse of role players to bring joy and education to residents of Phumlani Informal Settlements.

After handing out food parcels to the community, Williams told the Daily Voice: “I am very thankful for the speech Sergeant Allison Lamb gave on child abuse and women abuse.

"The children were listening carefully to her and I think there were some kids who said you can only report a missing person or rape incident within 24 hours and 48 hours. But now they also know that there is no time frame and that they can go immediately to a police station."

Meanwhile, over in Manenberg, the local SAPS decided to go green by planting seeds of kindness, under the theme: “It’s still in our hands.”

Brigadier Jayce Naidoo said the aim was to lead by example and remind others that Mandela’s values live on through everyday actions.

Naidoo said: “As law enforcement officers in SAPS, we are surrounded by young, impressionable minds - we recognise the importance of leading by example.

“67 minutes for Madiba, we pause to show care, to share, and to love in a moment in time."

Officers used their own resources to put together gifts and ideas to serve the community.

And in Mitchells Plain, the boys from the D6 Soccer Academy turned up the heat with a hotdog outreach dishing out 500 rolls to the homeless and underprivileged kids in Town Centre and Heinz Park.

Coach Ismail Vermeulen told the Daily Voice“There were a few people that didn’t get it so we decided to make it a monthly initiative and go to different locations. We are trying to give to communities in a sense of helping the kids off the streets and providing transport to make a difference.”

He added: “The academy’s mission is to help people who are not by any means necessary.”
