MUIZENBERG crime fighters have called for backup in the Overcome Heights area, after a string of murders over the last week.
According to Ward Councillor Mandy Marr, the violence escalated because of infighting in the Junky Funky Kids gang.
The community held a vigil on Sunday afternoon to honour those who were gunned down last week, with eight men murdered and another two injured in the area.
Following the gunning down of four men last Wednesday in Mountain Road and a triple murder on Saturday night in nearby Xakabantu, cops revealed another incident on Saturday evening.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg reported that two men were shot in Rasta Street, Overcome Heights, where one was fatally wounded and another one wounded but managed to survive the onslaught.
He said: “Muizenberg police registered murder and attempted murder cases for investigation following a shooting incident on Saturday, 16 August 2025, at about 7.30pm, in Rasta Street, Overcome Heights, in which an adult male was shot and fatally wounded and another wounded.
"According to reports unknown suspects fired shots in the direction of the victims. The adult male was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the other victim was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined.
“The suspects are yet to be arrested.”
The community held a vigil to remember the dead on Sunday afternoon and were joined by Ward Councillor Mandy Marr.
When Daily Voiced asked her what is the reason for the recent flare up in these deadly shootings, Marr said: "It is infighting within the JFK gang."
“I want to be clear that my office is fully engaged with the situation. We are in constant communication with SAPS Muizenberg, who are investigating all these incidents and have called for backup to be in our area.
“I have been assured that they are giving due attention to the crime scenes and that these will be processed as quickly as possible.
“This is a time for all of us to be careful. The situation is not stable, and we must all remain cautious and aware of what is happening around us.
“My heart is heavy with the recent shootings that have brought so much pain and fear to our streets. To the families who have lost loved ones and to those who have been injured, my thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time.”
