A WALL of remembrance was opened in Bonteheuwel on Tuesday during a memorial service held for the three-month-old baby who was tragically killed in a shooting last week.

Ward councillor Angus McKenzie said the wall is not just for mourning, but a call to action and a promise that Bonteheuwel will no longer bow to gangsterism.

Baby Moegsien was shot in Yellowwood street on 22 August while he was in the arms of his father.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported the infant to a hospital to resuscitate him, however, he was later declared deceased and laid to rest last Saturday.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the suspects fled the scene and remain at large.

Swartbooi said: “Police believe the attack may be gang-related. Bishop Lavis police have confirmed they are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.”

During the memorial, McKenzie said that hearts are still broken by baby Moegsien’s death.

Addressing residents, he said: “The shock is still extremely deep, but we are going to honour those that have passed on. Especially those who have passed on due to the senseless gang-related killings.

“Moegsien was three months old and died in a very violent way and should have never died in the way that he had died.

"We started the Bonteheuwel memorial wall where we will put up photos of innocent people who have been killed due to senseless violence and lost their lives unnecessarily.”

The wall serves family and loved ones to put pictures or leave flowers to remember their loved ones they have lost.

McKenzie added that the wall is a pledge to fight gangsterism and to end the senseless killings.
