DJ Ready D helps kids innie Plain recycle

Marsha Dean|Updated

CAPE Flats icon DJ Ready D is getting learners at various schools across Mitchells Plain involved in an exciting recycling campaign called Get in the Loop.

Ready D and members of the non-profit company GCAP (Great Cape Ambassador Project) in partnership with Petco are visiting five schools and teaching learners how to recycle correctly.

So laaities had better be on the lookout.

Each school is competing for a whopping R50 000 prize, which will go towards upgrades, maintenance, or other much-needed improvements. The winning school will be chosen based on the amount of recyclable material collected.

DJ Ready D explained: “We are encouraging young learners to become more aware of what’s known as a circular economy when it comes to recycling.

"The motivation behind the project is to make people more aware and conscious of the environment, as well as how to recycle correctly. This has been a valuable learning curve for me and the team.

"It’s important for us to follow through with initiatives like this because education and awareness are key. At the end of the day, we want to preserve our environment and recycling is not a one-dimensional process. There are different layers to it.”

The focus for this project is on teaching young learners about PET1 (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic recyclable containers, such as cooldrink bottles, peanut butter containers, and different sizes of water bottles as well as LBP (Liquid Board Packaging).

They get a demonstration on how these items should be collected, separated, and sorted into the correct recyclable bags and bins.

While learners are being taught about the importance of recycling and how to separate waste, they are also getting a lekker free performance from DJ Ready D and DJ Kixi as well as some of the best break dancers on the African continent.
