A TRAGIC accident in Stellenbosch claimed the life of one woman and reportedly left two people injured on Friday afternoon when a devastating crash occurred on a bridge.
It is reported that the brakes of the Toyota Quantum minibus had allegedly failed which led to the incident.
A video of the gruesome scene has been making the rounds on social media and shows the Toyota quantum minibus taxi crashed into the railing of a bridge with the body of the woman dressed what looks like a work uniform hanging from underneath of the taxi.
The incident took place in George Blake Road, Kayamandi around 12.30pm and left another car on the river bank.
Meanwhile, a older woman can be seen trapped in the Plankenberg River flowing under the bridge, holding onto rocks to prevent the stream of the water washing her away.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said that the woman was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel and that a culpable homicide case is under investigation.
Swartbooi reported: “Stellenbosch police attended to a complaint on Friday, 29 August 2025. When they arrived at the crime scene in George Blake Road at about 12.30am, they found a Toyota Quantum on the edge of the bridge.
"Further inspection indicated a woman underneath the vehicle. She was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.
"Stellenbosch police registered a culpable homicide for further investigation."
