Two Retreat women shot

Gang infighting raises tensions

Marsha Dean|Updated

GUN violence continues to flare up in the gang war zone of Steenberg and Retreat where two women shot inside a house during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident took place in Orrel Avenue around 1am where a 35-year-old woman was shot and killed and a 39-year-old woman was wounded and rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and said the motive for the shooting is gang-related.

Van Wyk reports: “Steenberg police registered a murder and an attempted murder following a shooting incident on Wednesday morning at about 01:00 at a premises in Orrel Avenue, Retreat, where a 35-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded and a 39-year-old injured.

"The injured victim was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. The motive is believed to be gang-related. The suspects are yet to be arrested.”

When Daily Voice contacted the Steenberg Community Police Forum for comment regarding the incident we were told by Chairperson Nicola Small that she was not yet briefed on the incident and therefore cannot comment.

A reliable source and resident in Steenberg told the Daily Voice that the area where the women were gunned down is volatile, amid an ongoing gang infighting between the Junky Funky Kids.

The source says: “We do not know what the reasons are for the women to be gunned down. Sometimes people are not directly involved in gangsterism but linked through family and friends or association and they get gunned down. These gangsters come for anybody, they don’t care."

"All we know is that the fight is internal among one gang but it is very worrisome because there are shootings all over and you do not know when the next incident is going to take place.

"The area is still tense and the community is uptight because you do not know what to expect next or who is next as innocent people are getting shot nowadays."
