Armed suspect shot and killed at tavern

AN ARMED skelm was shot dead during a robbery at a shebeen in Strand. 

The incident took place around 3.35pm on Monday at Rio Tavern in Sinenyweba Street, Lwandle when four unknown gunmen tried to rob the place. 

They ordered a woman behind the counter to open the burglar gate at gunpoint, but a man who came to deliver stock opened fire on the four suspects and fatally wounded one. 

Lwandle police are now investigating cases of attempted business robbery, attempted murder case and an inquest docket.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that the matter is under investigation and the suspects are yet to be arrested.

Gwala reported: “This office confirms that Lwandle police registered an attempted business robbery, attempted murder case and an inquest docket yesterday, following a shooting incident at a tavern in Sinenyweba Street, Lwandle.

“According to reports, four unknown gunmen entered the premises at around 3.35pm, ordering the lady behind the counter to open the burglar gate. 

“A man who was delivering stock in the premises opened fire, fatally wounding one of the four suspects, the three retaliated and fled unharmed.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. No arrest has been effected yet.”

When the Daily Voice reached out to the Community Police Forum for comment regarding the incident and the gun violence in the community, we were informed that all enquiries should be forwarded to the police.
